Independent Record (Helena, MT) - 2 Nov 1883

Robert M Steel, a younger brother of Dr Wm Steel, of Helena, died of crysipelas at Fort Macleod, Northwest Territory, on the 16th of October. Dr Steel did not hear of his brother's illness until the 21st of October, (five days after his death) the dispatch announcing his dangerous condition having been delayed by the telegraph line being down. The doctor immediately started to Fort Macleod, going by coach to Sun river and thence by private conveyance, traveling night and day. After passing Old Agency he met Robert Ford, who was just from Fort Macleod, and who told the doctor of his brother's death, which had occurred a week before. As the snow was very deep, rendering the road almost impassible, Dr Steel, by the advice of Mr Ford, returned to Helena, reaching home Wednesday. Robert M Steel was one of the old-time residents of this county. He was well known and liked in all parts of the Territory for his many excellent qualities. He was forty years old at the time of his death. [He was 44.]

Robert was the 6th of at least 12 children born to William Steele and Margaret Guyton. His great-grandfather was Revolutionary Soldier, Aaron Steele who was born in Newcastle Co, Delaware and died about 1795 in Abbeville Dist, SC. Robert's siblings were Joseph Guyton, William Love, Margaret, Esther Jane, James O, Sue, Martha, Anna Augusta, Myra, John Ross and Lou Alice Steele. The History of Pendleton, page 207, reports an addition sibling, Rebecca said to have married William Norris. No evidence of Rebecca in this family has been found in the 1850 to 1870 census records for William & Margaret Steele.

Sometime after the 1860 census, brothers Joseph Guyton, William Love, James and Robert M Steele headed west. All of them ended up in Montana. James' death was mentioned in an article reporting the death of Joseph and recounting the lives of all 4 brothers. In the Helena Independent, issue of 18 Dec 1908... "James Steele died in Anaconda four years ago."

It is uncertain that Robert is buried here but most likely since this cemetery was active at the time of his death.
