DEATH OF A CITIZEN, -- Captain William Bessent died of consumption at the residence of his father, Rev. A. J. Bessent, on Wednesday evening last. He served in the late war with credit to himself and country, having risen to the rank of Captain. He was in the "manhood of youth," having been married but a short time. -- The Valdosta Times. 2d.

He enlisted in Co. A 20th Georgia Battalion Cavalry on 12 May 1862 in Thomasville, GA. He rose in the rank from company secretary to first sergeant to second lieutenant to first lieutenant. He received a gunshot wound to the front part of the thigh near the groin and was sent home on furlough for 40 days on 6 June 1864.

In July 1864 his company was reorganized as Co. D 8th Georgia Regiment Cavalry. He surrendered at Thomasville, GA on 22 May 1865. He was the captain of his company at the time of surrender.

He records described him as being 5'10" Dark hair, dark eyes, dark complexion.
