Susan was a prolific academic, at the top of her class for her undergraduate degree in Musicology from Murray State University, as well as her Masters in European History from the University of Illinois. Her continuous intellectual pursuits lead her to meet her husband of 35 years, Drew, at meetings of the Naperville Astronomical Association.
Throughout her life she continued to expand her impressive classical musical repertoire, including being an accomplished vocalist and pianist, and later taking up the harp for fun. She was an avid patron of Lyric Opera of Chicago, and spent many years as a member of the New Classic Singers, based in Glen Ellyn.
A career civil servant, Susan put to use both her compassion and her ability to quickly learn foreign languages to aid the elderly, disabled, and less fortunate at Social Security Administration.
In her later years, Susan found great joy in writing short science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction both under her own name and the pen name Arsinoe de Blassenville. She took pride in her works, which were published both in print and online to great praise.
Susan is survived by her husband Drew Carhart, daughter Lesley Carhart, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Doris Nance, and her brother, John Nance Jr.
A memorial service is scheduled for May 28th, at the Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60624. All friends are welcome; RSVPs to the family are appreciated via the following link: http://bit.ly/1WTiwYY. Her wish was for donations to the Nature Conservancy (www.nature.org) in her name in lieu of flowers.
