1157647 Sergeant Cyril James Atfield, 24 Field Sqn RE / RAPC, age 35, killed in action when his camp at Al-Milah was attacked

Information from Roy Baird who served in Aden at the time of Cyrils death - "I was attached to 2nd Bn. Coldstream Guards and during a stint at Thumier in the Radfan Mountains with my Company, the nearby camp at Al Milah was attacked, resulting in two, including Cyril, being killed. As I happened to be the nearest Royal Army Pay Corps clerk to them at the time, I had to go to Al Milah for a couple of days to carry out a pay parade, compiled from documentation prepared by him, which was a strange experience. Sadly, the Coldstream Guards also suffered quite a number of casualties during our tour of duty in South Arabia and Aden, including six killed. All these are also interred in Aden as there was no repatriation in those days." Obituary - Sgt CJ Atfield RAPC It is with deep regret that we have to report that Sgt Atfield was killed by enemy action at approx. 0025 hours on 12th April 1965. In the early hours of the 12th April the Engineers camp at Al Milah came under moratr and rifle fire from a band of dissidents. During the action Sgt Atfield was regrettably killed.
