Wife of Deacon Seth Gates. Mother of Seth Merrill Gates (1800-1877), Calista (Gates) Bronson (1807-1893), Delia (Gates) Stowell (1816-1888) and Chauncey Curtis Gates (1819-1897).

Abigail was the oldest child of Gideon and Abigail Merrill. Gideon was a Revolutionary War patriot and as such Abigail's great great granddaughter, Athalia Gates, became a member of the DAR. Abigail's parents died in West Hartford between 1803 and 1804. She had five siblings, Asa, Pierpont, Arden, James and Celia. Her family had lived in Hartford area of Connecticut since the mid 1600's and although the exact burial of her parents in unknown, several generations of her ancestors are buried in the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford. Her grandparents were Gideon and Mary (Bigelow) Merrill.
