Mary Gorman Bowden was born March 4, 1916, in Norfolk, Va., and passed away Monday, May 9, 2005.

She grew up in Bon Aire and went to work at an early age as a legal secretary in Norfolk. She married Henry Bowden in 1945 and had two children, Henry Mosley Bowden of Gloucester, Va. and Jane Katherine Arthur who resides in California.

Mary worked for the state of Virginia for 35 years, but she is remembered and loved for all her artistic endeavors of writing and painting, areas in which she showed tremendous energy and talent. She valued friendship, her garden, and pets above all things. She actively participated in Ware Episcopal Church as long as she was able. She will be remembered for her generosity and acerbic wit.

Mary Bowden is survived by her two children; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 13, in Ware Church.
