Sewell H. Hopkins, 78, of Gloucester, VA, a retired professor of zoology at Texas A&M University, died in his sleep, Thursday 15, Nov 1984 in Walter Reed Memorial Hospital.

Sewell was the son of Nicolas Snowden Hopkins and Selina Lloyd Hepburn and the Great-Great Nephew of Johns Hopkins, the benefactor of Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital. A native of Gloucester, Sewell graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1927. He held a Masters Degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and a PhD from the University of Illinois.

He specialized in the study of parasitology and oceanography and did research on the effect of oil exploration/production on seafood in the Gulf of Mexico.

He returned to Gloucester in 1976 after his retirement from Texas A&M and was a member of Ware Episcopal Church. Pauline Cole Hopkins, his wife of 47 years, died 11 October 1976. She is buried next to Sewell.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Johns Hopkins of Lancaster, PA, and Nickolas Arthur Hopkins of Bellville TX; two sisters, Mrs. Nina Hopkins Baker and Mrs. Rebecca Hopkins Hammer, both of Gloucester; a brother Frank Snowden Hopkins of Washington, DC; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
