HUDSON—E. Gordon “Gordie” Van Buren, 88, a resident of Kinderhook, passed away suddenly at Columbia Memorial Hospital June 10, 2015.

He is survived by his son, Mark and daughter-in-law Jocelyn Van Buren of Burlington, CT, and three grandchildren of whom he was so very proud, Amanda, Erika and Edward. He was predeceased in 2011 by his wife and best friend of 53 years, Ann.

Mr. Van Buren was born September 11, 1926 in Albany to Benjamin A. and Sophie (Freising) Van Buren.

He graduated from Castleton High School and joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he attended SUNY Brockport where he received a BS degree in health and physical education and was a member of the baseball and basketball teams. Mr. Van Buren received an MS degree in public school administration from SUNY Albany and a certificate of director of health, physical education and recreation from Ithaca College. After graduating from SUNY Brockport, he taught physical education for a year with the Rensselaer County BOCES system and then began his tenure with the Ichabod Crane Central School system. During his 34 years in that district, Mr. Van Buren was a teacher, basketball, soccer and track coach, athletic director and assistant high school principal. After his retirement, he served as an assistant basketball coach at both Hudson Valley Community College and Union College. He enjoyed retirement by traveling, visiting with friends and family and attending as many sporting events as possible, as he did his entire life. He looked forward to his regular get-togethers with the Kinderhook Bourbon and Chowder Society, the Troy coaches and administrators group and the Albany coaches, athletes and administrators group.

He was a member, or former member of the following organizations: Kinderhook Reformed Church, former elder and deacon; Clapp Novak American Legion Post 1470; Northern Columbia Lions Club; Kinderhook Elks Lodge 2530; NYS Athletic Administrators Association; Secondary School Administrators of NYS; Kinderhook Recreation Commission, past chairman; Eastern Board of Approved Soccer Officials, past president; Capital District Baseball Umpires Association, past secretary and vice-president; Adirondack Board 36 of International Approved Basketball Officials (IABO); Central Hudson Valley Board 114 of IABO; Columbia-Greene Baseball Umpires Association; Section II Boys Basketball Committee, Patroon Athletic Conference, past president and secretary-treasurer;, Columbia County Youth Advisory Board and Winding Brook Country Club.

Mr. Van Buren authored many articles for various coaching and sports magazines, was a guest lecturer at many sports clinics and camps and was one of the original coaches for the prestigious 5-Star Basketball Camp. Mr. Van Buren was elected to both the Columbia County and Capital District Basketball Halls of Fame based on coaching his teams to 12 consecutive league championships and five sectional finals. In 2008, he was honored by having the athletic complex at Ichabod Crane High School named the E. Gordon Van Buren Athletic Complex.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 17, 11 a.m. at the Kinderhook Reformed Church, Route 9, Kinderhook, with the Reverend Rudy Visser officiating. Burial will follow in Kinderhook Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday, June 16 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie.
