Les was the oldest of three children, with sister Martha and brother Robert. His childhood years were spent between the ranch in Robertson and the mining camps of Sublette, north of Kemmerer. He began school at the Sublette mining camp, then later at the Robertson and Mountain View schools. He left home as a teenager and worked various jobs as a ranch hand, sheep herder, cowboy, and for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1937 he met his sweetheart Mary E Widdop and they married on October 10, 1939, in Coalville, Utah. Their marriage lasted more than 80 years. They had four children, son Leonard, and daughters Linda, Kathy and Gayle. The early years of their marriage Les worked for the railroad and in the coal mines. He then became self-employed working in the timber industry and trucking with his own trucks for various jobs. Later he worked for and retired from Uinta County School District 4, as a custodian, maintenance and school activity bus driver. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mountain View.
