Death of an Old Citizen - It is our painful duty to announce the demise, in this city yesterday, of Bergen Bateman, Esq., the father of Hon. Newton Bateman, state superintendent of public instruction. The deceased had reached the advanced age of eighty years and six months, having been for a long period a well known and greatly respected citizen of this place. Death of an Aged Citizen - Mr. Bergen Bateman, the venerable father of Hon. Newton Bateman, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, died at the residence of the latter, in this city, on Monday evening last, at the advanced age of more than eighty years. We have known Mr. Bateman for many years, and always as a Christian gentleman. His funeral takes place this morning at ten o'clock, from the residence of Hon. N. Bateman, at the corner of Edwards and Spring streets. - IL State Journal, Springfield, Il, Sept. 20, 1865
