FORMER U. S. CURRENCY COMPTROLLER IS DEAD
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 17. (AP) William Prentiss Jr., 68, lawyer, financier and former United States comptroller of the currency, died today in an ambulance en route to a hospital. He underwent a major operation about three weeks ago and was recovering when he fell, suffering a hemorrhage, associates said. Prentiss was born in Macomb, Ill where his father was a well known trial lawyer. Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Prentiss and Helen Soest, and a son, Paul, all of Los Angeles.

William Prentiss was the son of Judge William Prentiss and Elizabeth Helen McCoughey. He married first to Maria Jane "Ria" Franklin on 6 Nov 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. Together they had one son, William Franklin Prentiss. In about 1905, Ria Franklin Prentiss moved to Houston, Texas where she secured a divorce. She then married Alfred T. Lucas, Andrew Denzil Langham and finally, film star Clark Gable.
William Prentiss married a second time, to Elma Christine Swenson on 3 Aug 1910 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Together they had children Helen, Ruth and Paul. They were divorced at the time of his death.
