CPO Schmardel was a veteran of WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. Born in Rossville, Staten Island, he joined the navy in 1945 after attending Tottenville High School. He served on the U.S.S. Carp, a Balao class submarine. Mr. Schmardel served in the navy for 28 years, and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1973. The U.S.S. Carp was commisioned on Feb. 28, 1945. After training in Panama she was sent to Pearl Harbor, arriving on May 21, 1945. She then commenced her only mission of WWII from June 8, 1945-Aug. 7, 1945. She cruised the coast of Honshu, Japan's largest island, destroying small vessels and patrolling for carriers of the 3rd fleet, which were engaged in air strikes against mainland Japan. The Carp was based in San Diego and was the flagship for submarine division 71. In Korea she supported United Nations forces during a cruise from Sept. 22, 1952 till April 1953. CPO Schmardel continued his service through most of the Viet Nam War. He was a member of VFW Post 3781 and the Knights of Columbus. He is inurned with his son, Joseph Jr. who died in 1981.
