Attending the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, he graduated with an associate bachelors degree in 1837, and a Medical Degree in 1840. Shortly after graduation he was married to Miss Ann Maria Caldwell and opened a medical practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
On February 23rd, 1847, he was appointed as Regimental Assistant Surgeon of the United States Regiment of Voltigeurs & Foot Riflemen, and served with the regiment during the Mexican War. Resigning his commission on July 12th, 1847, he returned home to Philadelphia.
Dr. Chaloner died on October 21st, 1856, at Burlington, New Jersey and was buried beside his wife at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
