Thorndale, Texas, Feb. 15--James Henry Fulcher died at his home in the San Gabriel Community at 9:30 o'clock Sunday night after an illness extending over a period of about one year, the past several months of which he has been confined to his room and bed. In the passing of this man Milam county loses another of her pioneer citizens--one among the few who experienced the exciting Indian raids and thrills incident to the buffalo chase. Decedent was born near old Independence, Washington county, on September 12, 1847. His parents moved to Milam county a few weeks after he was born and settled on a tract of land on the south side of the San Gabriel river where the decedent has since made his home. He was married in 1872 to Nancy Victoria Locklin. He is survived by his widow and five children: J. T. Fulcher, postmaster at Thorndale, T. A. Flucher[sic] of Ganado; Howard and Pete Flucher[sic] and Mrs. Stella Cast all of the SSan[sic] Gabriel community. Interment was made in the Locklin cemetery at 4:30 o'clock Monday afternoon following a brief funeral service conducted at the residence by Rev. R. E. Burke of the Thorndale Baptist church, assisted by R. E. Roberts of San Gabriel and Elder Sam Elliott of Thorndale. The attendance was one of the largest ever assembled at that burying grounds there being over fifty automobiles in the procession. The bereaved have the sympathy of the entire community in their hour of sorrow.

Mr. Fulcher was born in Milam County September 12, 1847 near Old Independence, moving to his last residence in the fall of 1872 and residing in the one house continuously until his death.

Being a progressive spirited man he was always identified with every forward move for his community, and his fellowman, he was actively identified with the movement of extermination of the bands of famous horse thieves in this county in the early days.

Besides the widow, four sons and one daughter survive the deceased. J.T. Fulcher, postmaster of Thorndale, being the elder of the sons.

Funeral services were conducted at the late residence by Rev. J.J. Burk, pastor of the Thorndale Baptist church, of which deceased had been a consistent member for more than 30 years, after which interment was made in the Locklin family cemetery near San Gabriel.
