Daniel Wilder was born the 16th March 1824 in Shelby county, Alabama. Daniel was the son of John Wilder and Sena Jordan.

Daniel married the widow Susan Jane Ticer Niven (Susan is the daughter of Samuel Ticer and Polly Spears) on the 25th January 1848 in Shelby county, Alabama. Daniel was the step-father to Susan's three children by her deceased husband, Jesse Lindsay Niven. Those children were: Samuel Lindsay Niven; Mary Ann Niven Harper Farrell; and Jesse Broom Niven. Daniel and Susan Wilder were the parents of nine children: Martha Jane Wilder; Laura Izora Wilder; Sarah Francis Wilder; Sena Elisabeth Wilder; Susan Alanah Wilder; John Ticer Wilder; William Austin Wilder; James Monroe Wilder; and Emily Clark Wilder.

Daniel joined the Confederate army sometime in late summer 1864. Daniel was at the battle of Nashville and Franklin, Tennessee in December, 1864. The Confederate army retreated back toward Alabama and crossed the Tennessee river on Christmas day 1864. The army's retreat had begun in rain that eventually turned to sleet and then to snow. Daniel's feet were frostbitten when he arrived at the home of Mr. C.A. Howard. Mr. Howard took Daniel into his home where Daniel was cared for. Mr. Howard in a letter to Susan, told her that Daniel's feet were frostbitten and they mortified - meaning Daniel developed gangrene in his feet. Daniel died at Mr. Howard's home on the 17th of January 1865. Mr. Howard stated in the letter to Susan that they buried Daniel as best as they could in common plain coffin and soldiers clothes. Daniel is buried in an unmarked grave in the Barnett Cemetery, Lauderdale county, Alabama. The original letter from Mr. C.A. Howard to Susan Wilder is owned by Carolyn Wilder.
