William E. Bufkin, 81, retired educator, died at his home in Anguilla on 20 April 1974 after a short illness.

Funeral services will be at Anguilla United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bert Edwards and the Rev. Bob Smith will officiate. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Bufkin was born in Barlow in Copiah County. He attended public schools in Hazelhurst and later entered prep school at Millsaps. During World War I, he served with the National Guard for 17 months in France where he attended the University of Toulouse. After his discharge in 1919, he returned to graduate at Mlillsaps. He later attended the University of Chicago and received his masters degree at Columbia University in 1933.

Mr. Bufkin was associated with the public schools in Pontotoc, Jackson, Leland and Rolling Fork. He was a member of the summer faculty at Mississippi State University and at the University of Mississippi. Widely known in education organizations throughout the state, he had been associated with the C. M. Gooch Foundation, served as vice president and president of School Administration Association, was a member of the education policy committee of the Mississippi Education Association, and had been a member of the board of trustees at Millsaps College since 1946.

An active member of the United Methodist Church, he served as treasurer of the North Mississippi Conference and had served as chairman of the Board of Stewards of the Leland United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Leland Rotary Club and served as president in 1940. At the time of his death, he was an active member of the Anguilla Church.

Mr. Bufkin was married to Matte Bullard in 1929, and after her death, he married Josie Green Flanagan of Anguilla.

Survivors are Mrs. Josie Bufkin of Anguilla; two daughters, Mrs. C. E. Mashburn of Marshall, N. C., and Mrs. L. D. Cook Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; two step-sons, Robert Flanagan and Lawrence Flanagan of Vicksburg; one brother, Earl Bufkin of Natchez; 11 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Millsaps College or to the Methodist Children’s Home in Jackson.
