Mary C. Chant was a daughter of Nancy Alter and her second husband Joseph Drum. She first appears in the 1855 NY state census of Palatine, Montgomery County, NY listed with her widowed father and her brother John, living in the household of her half-sister Mrs. Maria E. Klock Nichols. By 1860, her father was also deceased, and Mary appeared in the family of James Crocker. In the 1865 census, Mary worked as a domestic servant in the home of wealthy farmer, Nicholas Youngs. Five years later in the 16 Aug 1870 census, she was still working as a domestic, this time for Norman Youngs, son of retired Nicholas Youngs.

In August 1871, Mary Drum gave birth to her son George. Both Mary Drum and her son George Drum were enumerated in 1875 in the home of Mary's half-brother Sylvester Klock in Johnstown, Fulton County, NY. Mary was married in 1877 to an English glove maker, Edward Chant. Thereafter, George Drum was known as George Chant. Mary and Edward Chant had three daughters: Jennie B. Chant Austin Harrington, Luella Chant Butler, and Rosa Chant Fisher. Mary appears in Gloversville, NY census records for 1900, 1905, 1910, and 1915. Mary Drum Chant died 11 February 1918 following a lengthy illness.

Mary Catherine Chane, aged 67, died Monday morning at 7 at her home, 12 1/2 Seventh avenue, Gloversville, after a long illness. She was born in Montgomery county but had lived nearly all of her life in Gloversville. She is survived by her husband, Edward Chant; one son, George Chant; three daughters, Mrs. Jennie Austin, Mrs. Robert Butler and Mrs Levi Fisher, all of Gloversville; one brother, John Drumm of Canastota; one sister, Mrs. Julia Stewart of Middletown, Ohio; and 9 grandchildren. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Butler 12 Seventh avenue, Gloversville.
