Obituary
Sarepta Cordelia Young was born near Birmingham, Iowa, May 3, 1854, and departed this life January 23, 1912, aged 57 years, 8 months and 20 days.
Being left motherless when only a few days old, she grew to womanhood, spending part of the time in Iowa and part in Missouri, where her father moved in 1864. There she was married, February 24, 1876, to Geo. W.. Lowry, who preceded her to his reward about nine months.
She was converted and began her Christian life at an early age in the Cumberland Presbyterian church, but united with the Methodist church here when they moved to Kansas in the spring of 1884.
She leaves to mourn her sudden death, three sisters, four brothers and one daughter, Mrs. Grace Frantz and husband, besides many other relatives and friends.
Since the death of her husband last spring, her home was here with her daughter, but she was spending the winter in California with relatives when her life was suddenly take last Tuesday morning by accident at Saint Helena, California.
Mrs. Lowry was visiting a nephew, Charley Ropp. at St. Helena, California, and on Tuesday about 6 a.m., she and Mr. Ropp were starting to San Francisco. He lives near an interurban line. They were hurrying to the depot and Mr. Ropp went ahead to flag the car, telling Mrs. Lowry to wait until it stopped. As there was a heavy fog that morning the motorman did not see Mr. Ropp's signal and the car did not stop. The electric headlight undoubtedly confused Mrs. Lowry, or for some reason, she stepped upon the track in front of the car, which was moving at the rate of 30 miles an hour when it struck her, throwing her about 40 feet and killing her instantly. On account of the coroner's inquest and the peculiar laws of California they were unable to start for Conway Springs until 3 p.m., Wednesday.
The funeral of Mrs. Sarepta Lowry was held in the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. The whole church building was crowded to its utmost capacity, standing room included, by the many friends, who came to express their sympathy to the bereaved daughter, her husband and other relatives, and pay a last tribute to the one they so dearly loved. The service was conducted by Rev. I. A. Bartholomew, the pastor, assisted by Rev. J. L. Anderson, former pastor here, but now from Wichita.
Mr. and Mrs. Lowry united with the Methodist church here about 26 years ago, and have been faithful and efficient workers here until their decease. He preceded her to their reward 9 months and 3 days. We cannot express in words what we know about the life of this loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. Life to her, was worth living, because it was one of continual service, love and cheerfulness. Her sunny smile, cheering words and tender touch, were sweet balms of healing to the sick, the sorrowing and the discouraged. Many happy hours have been spent in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lowry, and many have bowed with them at the family altar, have heard them discuss the good things which the pastor had said, and tell of the good times enjoyed at the prayer meetings, and the blessings received there. We have been kindly and smilingly reproved for rash deeds and unkind words, and heeded, because they were full of love. We cannot help but grieve for they are missed in our community. We know that our lives have been made better because of associations with these followers of Christ, who lived so close to his teachings.
