Phyllis L. Abdella
July 18, 1934 - January 16, 2020
Phyllis L. (Rodwell) Abdella, 85, passed away peacefully Thursday evening at her home, January 16, surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren.
Phyllis was born and raised in Worcester. One of three children to Phillip and Julia “Babci” (Kuseh)Rodwell, she graduated from Commerce High School Class of 1953. During her high school years, she met and fell in love with her beloved husband of 58 years Alfred “Fred” Abdella. As a young woman, Phyllis worked as Operator 59 at New England Telephone Company. Later, she owned Royal Burger on Main Street with her husband Fred. Phyllis and Fred settled in the Grafton Hill Section of Worcester where they shared their love and raised their family. Phyllis leaves behind a son, Michael A. Abdella and his husband Nicholas Olivieri of Northborough and Provincetown and two daughters; Diane J. Russell and her husband Anthony of Worcester, and Kimberly M. D’Acri and her longtime companion Warren Sweeney of Worcester. Phyllis is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Jillian, Jenna, Julie, Jake,
Anthony, Christopher and Michael “Mikey” and his partner Jenny Pappas, with whom Phyllis lived with. Phyllis leaves her sister in laws, Helen A. Zaremba of Worcester and Terry Abdella of Florida, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Phyllis is predeceased by her husband Fred and brothers Ernest “Ernie” and William “Bill” Rodwell.
Phyllis cherished her time with her grandchildren she so much adored. Phyllis was lovingly known to them as “Situ”. No sleepover was complete without an 11pm ham sandwich and her famous pancakes in the morning. Situ also made sure everyone’s feet were clean before bed even if that meant cleaning them up in the sink. Situ always had a full house with visits from her grandchildren, even as they grew into adult. The bus to the casino never left without Phyllis on it. She loved playing Blackjack and taking her chances on the slots. For many years, Phyllis spent every Tuesday night at Bingo with her friends. No Christmas was complete without dozens of pierogies, hand made by Phyllis with her family recipe.
Phyllis was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Worcester.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, at the Chiampa Funeral Home ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center from 4:00 - 7:00 pm.
