Ruth Almeda Hickman
(March 30, 1915 - February 21, 2011)
Ruth Almeda Hickman, daughter of Emmet and Verda (Newton) Jones, was born March 30, 1915, in Wright County near Odin, on the farm south of Woods Fork Creek . She departed this life, Monday, February 21, 2011, in Hartville Care Center, at the age of ninety-five years, ten months and twenty-one days.
On September 17, 1933, she was united in marriage to Otis Eugene "Wheeler" Hickman, and to this union a son and a daughter were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, "Wheeler" on November 15, 1981, her son, James Emmet Hickman, her daughter, Alice Lynn Daniel, a grandson, Jerry L. Hickman, a great-great-grandson, Dylan J. Hickman, two brothers, Truman and Norman Jones, and two sisters, Alice Floyd and Priscilla Hughes.
Ruth is survived by her brother, Paul Jones of Springfield, MO; daughter in-law Mary Hickman of Independence, MO; five grandchildren, James Hickman and wife, Shelly, of Independence, MO, Brad Daniel of Amarillo, Texas, Brenda Hawley of Amarillo, TX, Leslie Saddler and wife, Rose, of Kansas City, MO, and Linda Stillwell of Houston, TX; six great-grandchildren, Chris Hickman of Lee's Summit, MO, Cyndee Farris of St. Robert, MO, Nicole Scott of Independence, MO, Kristi Saddler of Independence, MO, Becky Stillwell of St. Louis, MO, and Bill Stillwell of Houston, TX; fifteen great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born and reared in Wright County and lived in the Pleasant Hill area throughout most of her life. After she and "Wheeler" were married, she was a homemaker as well as working at the MFA Exchange in Hartville for many years.
Ruth had professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was an longtime member of the Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church, where she played the piano and served as a Sunday School Teacher through the years. She centered her life around her family and their care. She was a sixty plus year member of the Pleasant Hill Extension Club, and truly enjoyed getting together with the ladies.
She was an avid and gifted quilter and had made and given numerous quilts to others. Tending to her garden, canning, and preparing the bounty of it was another of her talents.
Ruth was a loving wife and mother, a cherished grand mother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, a beloved sister and aunt, and was a kind and caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and will treasure the memories she created for her family and friends. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed and will live on in our hearts forever.
Funeral services for Ruth Hickman will be Saturday February 26, 2:00 pm at Pleasant Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday evening February 25, 6-8:oo pm in Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Hartville, Missouri.
