I was only a very young child when I met my Uncle Smitty, but, maybe it was chemistry, I felt a close attachment to him. I remember him leading me along a creek or lake shore and me slipping on the moss on the sand. I thought I was slipping on fish! He was holding my hand and telling me it was all right, they were not fish, and laughing. Then I remember a later time when and he was talking and crying to my father while I was sitting on his lap. Uncle Smitty was an alcoholic with many problems. He had a wonderful wife, Aletha. Such a gentle soul and very much a lady and loyal wife.
