Obituary for Arthur "Art" Bates
Arthur “Art” Bates, 85 of Centerville passed away Monday, February 17, 2020 at Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Urbandale.
Art was born to Clyde & Ena (Rolando) Bates in Iowa City on September 11, 1934. Art received his education from Mystic High School, then went to Drake University and University of Northern Iowa. On June 25, 1955, Art was united in marriage to Mary Vonevich for 49 years. She preceded him in death. To this union came five children: Carla, Tom, Brian, Jeff and Connie. Art would later be united in marriage to Marge Meyer. Between them, they had eight children.
Art worked as a general foreman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He especially enjoyed these activities with his family. Art was a family man who loved spending time with those most important to him. He also enjoyed being a Mason, as well as his time on the farm raising cattle.
Survivors include his wife, Marge Meyer, children: Carla Bates, Tom Bates (Diana Gordin), Brian Bates (Stephanie), step-children: Cynthia Cowan (Gregg), Robert Meyer (Shawna), Allison Haas (Hap), 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and numerous extended family. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Bates, parents, great-granddaughter, Addison Munday, children: Jeff Bates, Connie Bates, brothers: Bill, Russell, Bob Bates and three infant sisters.
Funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Sunday, February 23, 2020 at Thomas Funeral Home. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Highland Cemetery in Mystic at a later date. Memorials may be given to Mystic Community Center, Hospice of the Midwest, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
