He was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Whitinsville, the son of William B. Appleton Sr. and Selma (Howe) Appleton, and had lived almost his entire life in Leominster . He graduated from Leominster High School in 1940 and Cushing Academy, Ashburnham, in 1942.
Mr. Appleton was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during both World War II and the Korean War. He was a fighter-pilot instructor in World War II and served as a squadron commander of a medical evacuation unit in Korea. He retired with the rank of major.
Mr. Appleton worked 12 years as a paper broker for the Pratt Paper Co. in Boston before he retired some years ago. Previously, he was employed as a salesman at the former Fitchburg Paper Co. in Fitchburg.
He was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and a member of the Wilder Lodge of Masons.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Mavis R. (White) Appleton; three sons, William B. Appleton III and his wife, Sherry, of North Andover, John W. Appleton and his wife, Diane, of Charlton, and Greg H. Appleton and his wife, Jane, of Gardner; a daughter, Susan A. Bartlett and her husband, Thomas, of Leominster ; a brother, Samuel "Clark" Appleton of Milford, N.H.; six grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
