Retired U.S. Navy Chief Machinist's Mate James L. Reed, 63, died October 7, 1999, in Chesapeake.

Born in Lekieville, Ky., he retired from the Navy after 21 years and also from civil service at the Public Works Center, NOB, after 21 years. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and American Legion Post No. 327.

Survivors include his wife, Shelby Reed; a daughter, Deborah Reed of Virginia Beach; a son, Stuart Reed and his wife, Kathy, of Chesapeake; his father, Charlie Reed of Forest Hills, Ky.; two sisters, Della Justice of Forest Hills and Charlene Brown of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Bob Reed of Lexington, Ky.; two grandchildren, Jacob Reed and Savannah Reed; and a host of dear friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gretta Reed.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, by Dr. G. Keith Almond. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park with military honors accorded. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
