HAROLD E. NESS age 79 of Spearfish, SD.

After a brief battle with cancer, Harold's time on earth peacefully ended July 28, 2007 at his residence, as he began his journey home surrounded by his family.

Harold was born in Worthing, SD on April 20, 1928 to Oscar and Grace (Hagemeyer) Ness. He grew up in the Willow Lake area of eastern South Dakota.

He married Clara Bakken in Huron on May 11, 1953. They lived in Clark, S.D. prior to moving to Spearfish in August of 1957.

After moving to Spearfish, Harold was employed at Homestake and Pope & Talbot Sawmills until taking retirement from both companies. In the past few years, he has enjoyed driving through the hills, spending time with his family, camping, and being a member of the Key City Ramblers. He took great pride in all his grandchildren, the last months it was a great joy for him to rock and sing to "His little man" Alex.

Survivors include his wife Clara of Spearfish; children; Cheryl (Kelvin) Kiel, Spearfish; DuWayne (Michelle) Ness, Rapid City; Gerald (Mary) Ness, Jackson, WY; Ronda (Bruce) Jarvis, Spearfish; two brothers, Odean Ness, Box Elder and Jerry Ness, El Dorodo Hills, CA; one sister, Bonnie Schumaker, Spearfish and one brother-in-law, Jack Barden, Spearfish.

Special memories were made by the young in Harold's life by his grandchildren: Lisa, Adam, Toby, Larry, Tiffany, Joy, Kyle & Carter. Some extra special moments came later by marriages: Tonya, Michael, Cori & Callie. Blessed from these came 9 great grandchildren.

He is also survived by aunts; Gertrude Fansin and Josphine Caldwell, numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister; Edith Barden, one brother-in-law Jim Varner and one nephew Stan Varner.

Memorial services will be Monday, August 6th 2007 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish with Pastor Kent Stillson officiating, inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
