Laura Hand arrived in New York in October of 1845 from Liverpool as a child. As a teenager, she spent summers with her aunt, Rebecca Allen Johnson at the Menlo Park Ranch in California. She was noted as "a striking beauty" when she married, Dr. Charles E. Blake, 18 years her senior. Their first son, Alfred Edward was born on the Menlo Park Ranch in 1861. The couple moved to San Francisco, where their remaining children were born.
An 1868 map indicates that the couple owned 22 acres of the Menlo Park Ranch. Most likely this land was a gift from her aunt, Rebecca A Johnson. In 1891, Laura created the Blake Tract, an 11 acre parcel and one of Menlo Park's first subdivisions. After Charles died in 1898, Laura developed the remaining 11 acre parcel.
Laura remarried in 1901. She died five years later in November 1925, at age 81.
