Samuel Aardewerk was appointed Chazzan and teacher of the Jewish community in Alphen aan den Rijn on Sunday 22 March 1936. A few days after his appointment he married Bertha van der Hoek. They resided in the offical residence of the Jewish community, Rijnkade 10 in Alphen aan den Rijn. The chairman of the Jewish community, Louis Nathan van Dien, appointed him. He welcomed Samuel and his fiancée and gave them an electric clock, a mirror and a tablecloth as a gift from the Jewish community.
Chief Rabbi I. Maarsen spoke next, followed by D. van Dien, chairman of 'Lekach Tov', where Aardewerk was appointed teacher. Finally, J. van der Wijk, board member of 'Teref Chouliem' asked Aardewerk for aid for the ill.
On 11 August 1942, the first Jews from Alphen were called up to come to the station the next day. Samuel Aardewerk and his wife were among those Jews, but for unknown reasons they were allowed to stay. On 30 September 1942, policemen from Alphen and the German feldgendarmerie came to the houses of many Jews to bring them to the IJsbaanterrein. The Jews had most likely received a letter ordering them to do this the day before, since many had already packed their things. Samuel Aardewerk and his wife were part of those Jews.
The Jews had to walk from the IJsbaanterrein to the station. Many of the townspeople of Alphen sympathised with the Jews and accompanied them on their walk to the station. Here they said goodbye to their fellow citizens with hugs and tears.
Samuel Aardewerk and his wife were transport via Vught and Westerbork to Sobibor.
The Samuel Aardewerksteeg in Alphen aan den Rijn is named after Samuel.
Samuel's name is mentioned on the Jewish Monument in Alphen aan den Rijn.
On the Oosterbegraafplaats in Alphen aan den Rijn a monument remembers all Jewish Holocaust victims, including Samuel Aardewerk.
