Although born in Washington DC, he grew up in Yonkers, NY. John was the oldest of a family of seven children. His father was of German descent and his mother, Irish. He used his athletic abilities to play Professional Minor League Baseball before WWII and the US Army took him away, never to return to his first love in sports. Much admired for his story telling ability, he lived an interesting life.
