US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1837 and opened a law practice in Canton, Illinois. He was a member of the State house of representatives in 1849 and 1850 and judge of the State circuit court, 1850 to 1855. In 1857, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth, Thirty-sixth, and Thirty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1863. In 1865, he was appointed by President Andrew Johnson chief justice of Nebraska Territory and served until 1867. From 1867 to 1869, he was collector of internal revenue for the Peoria district, Illinois. His last public office was as a judge for the prevailing provisional government of Mississippi in 1869.
