Her husband, who died in 1977, was a well known behind the scenes political power in Nashville and Davidson County during the 1950's and 1960's. Mr. Flippen was a campaign fund raiser and adviser to Mayor Beverly Bailey, Metro's first mayor.
The Flippens owned Clark Hardware Co. on Fourth Avenue South for many years.
She is survived by a son, James Flippen; two daughters-in-law, Jean Flippen and Laura L. Flippen; three brothers, Arnett Duty, Frank Duty and Charles Duty; three grandchildren, Robert E. Flippen Jr., James F. Flippen and Debbie Karch; and a great grandchild, Cassie Nicole Flippen.
Services were held yesterday at Belmont United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Woodlawn Memorial Park.
