NORFOLK - Dempsey John Abernathy, 68, of 2412 Palmyra St., owner-operator of the Princess Anne Iron Works, 3920 E. Princess Anne Road, died Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in a hospital.

A native of Elizabeth City, N.C., he lived her 15 years. He was the husband of Mrs. Dorothy Rye Abernathy.

He was a Baptist and member of Moose Lodge 898.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dolores Ann Yant of Chesapeake and Mrs. Lawanda Raye Knowles of Portsmouth, a son, Jackie Donald Abernathy of Fayetteville, N.C., two sisters, Mrs. Ida Barnes of Elizabeth City and Mrs. Nan Forehand of Salemburg, N.C., a brother, Johnnie King of Salemburg, six grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Twiford Funeral Chapel, Colley Avenue, by the Rev. Dale Burden of Fairmount Park Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
