Walter G. Phillips, 81, passed away last Wednesday, March 19, at 7:15 a.m. in the Jarman hospital. Death came shortly after his arrival there and was due to a heart ailment. Mr. Phillips was born in Indiana, February 25, 1871,the son of Washington and Isabel Lawhead Phillips. He moved with his parents to Newton, Illinois in early childhood, where he received his schooling, and later taught there. He married Jennie Reece of Monticello in 1894. She passed away several years ago. Mr. Phillips farmed several years in the Garrett and Macedonia neighborhood before coming to Tuscola, where he was employed as a rural mail carrier for twenty years. After retirement he devoted much of his time to his church. He was married on Nov. 7, 1948 to Marie Ernst of Tuscola. Other survivors besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Emma Krous amd Mrs. Pearl Crowdis, both of Champaign; two sons, Adrian and Clell, farmers in the Tuscola area; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted in the Chapel at the Waddington Funeral Home last Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. E.L. Kernodle, paster of the Church of God officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Collins of Garrett sang "Beyond the Sunset," and " The Eastern Gate," accompanied by Ted Cox at the organ. Pallbearers were the grandsons: Harley and Dale Phillips and Russell O'Bryan of Tuscola, Eugene Kelley, Martinsville, Leslie Rogers, Pickneyville, Allen Grey, Arcola, and Wm. Stillman of Argenta. Burial was made in the Tuscola cemetery.
