Helen Aamot was born at home in Lac qui Parle, Minnesota on September 2, 1912 to Louis and Ophelia Borgendale. She died on August 4, 2007 at United General Hospital with the presence, thoughts and prayers of family and friends.
In her own words, Helen 'was very thankful that her parents would sacrifice so much to send her to high school', and she began a life filled with education and learning. After attending St. Cloud (MN) Teacher's College for more than two years, Helen was offered a teaching position and with jobs in the Depression era scarce, she accepted, and began a career she continued until retiring in 1976 for the Sedro-Woolley School District. While teaching, she continued her education and received a Bachelor's Degree in education and her fifth year from Western Washington University.
Helen Lucille Borgendale and Ralph William Aamot spoke their sacred vows on June 26, 1938 at Baxter Lutheran Church on a beautiful Sunday evening. They began a life together that headed them west with the outbreak of WWII. They became residents of Skagit County in 1946.
Some of the organizations in which she held active leadership roles include American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters, Washington School Retirees, SPARC, Museum of Northwest Art, Northwest Regional Council (Area Agency on Aging), Burlington Lutheran Church, AARP, United General Hospital Auxiliary (Evergreen Guild), and Norlum Foundation. She was awarded the Liberty Bell Award in 1984 by the Sakgit County Bar Association, and was SPARC Citizen of the Year in 1985.
Preceded in death by her husband Ralph W. Aamot in 1974, she is survived by children Joyce and Taylor Greene of Sequim, WA, Jacqueline Aamot of Washington, DC, Lance and Dr. Marcy Zwelling-Aamot of Long Beach, CA, Astrid Aamot of Samish Island, and Alan and Sharon Aamot of Burlington; grandchildren Julie Berry, Michael Stewart, Kym Dahl, Chris Dahl, Wendy Scott, Leigh Germain and Randall Aamot; great-grandchildren Christopher Berry, Brianna Berry, and Christopher Scott; and many loving nieces and nephews. Good friends abound. One of 11 children, she is survived by a brother, Leo Borgendale, of Montevideo, MN, and a sister and brother-in-law, Adele and Lee Benson, of Minneapolis.
Services will be held at Burlington Lutheran Church, where Helen was a member for 57 years, on August 9, 2007 at 11:00 am. Inurnment will be in the cemetery of Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson, MN, near her mother, father and several siblings in September of 2007. She will be accompanied back to MN by several of her children and grandchildren.
