Ella Gribbin was the youngest of seven children of John and Catharine Fagan Gribbin, born on the family farm in South Valley NY, neighbors of the Woods and Laughlin families. She was originally christened "Ellen" and attended school until fourth grade, learning to read and write. She remained on the farm until the early 1900s when she moved to her brother Henry's home in Chicago IL. to be housekeeper for Henry and his five children.
By 1910 Ella was a live-in servant at the home of James and Katherine Laughlin in South Valley NY, next door to Henry Gribbin, who had returned to New York State with his wife Ellen and the children. Later Ella moved with Henry's family to Jamestown NY and then in 1920 Ella became a boarder in the home of Edward and Jennie Woods Kelly in Ellicott NY. Jennie was her niece, daughter of Ella's sister Mary Ann Gribbin Woods.
On 22 September 1921, Ella was admitted to the Gowanda State Homeopathic Hospital in Gowanda NY. Census records indicate that during her years at Gowanda Ella did ward work and was at times a wage worker.
Ella rests now in the New Catholic section of the Gowanda State Hospital Cemetery on Wheater Rd in Collins NY.
