Mr. Vanderbilt was born in New York City, the son of Eugene J. and Florence (Haskell) Vanderbilt.
During an extensive career in the insurance industry, Mr. Vanderbilt was responsible for marketing and strategic planning at The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, and USF&G;, where he helped develop the Life Insurance Division of that company.
He later accepted the position of senior consultant at LIMRA (Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association) International, and was named vice president of marketing for the Home Insurance Group of New York.
After retiring from the insurance industry, Mr. Vanderbilt became an instructor and assistant to the president of the Morse School of Business in Hartford.
During World War II, Mr. Vanderbilt was a member of the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of captain.
He served under General George Patton in North Africa and Sicily.
Always interested in community affairs, Mr. Vanderbilt was an active member of the West Hartford United Methodist Church, and was assistant director of the West Hartford Seniors Job Bank.
He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School and Fordham University.
Mr. Vanderbilt is survived by his loving wife, Dolores Balinas Vanderbilt; Joseph Pope, husband of his deceased sister, Elizabeth; and sister-in-law, Eleanor B. Lankin.
A memorial service was held at the West Hartford United Methodist Church.
