Deceased Name: Frederick G. Gorman, Latin Teacher
Frederick G. Gorman, 64, the last Latin teacher in the northwest suburbs' high school District 214, died Saturday at Northwest Community Hospital, in Arlington Heights.
When Mr. Gorman began teaching Latin for District 214 in 1960 he was one of five Latin teachers there, but by the 1980s he was the only one teacher left. He taught at Buffalo Grove, Wheeling and Rolling Meadows high schools, visiting all three schools every day.
His students, some of whom commuted from other high schools to attend his classes, nicknamed him "Super G." He was named "Outstanding Latin Teacher" for 1986 by the Illinois Classical Conference.
Mr. Gorman was a devoted fan of Latin. "It's useful in learning other languages," he said. "You also learn a lot of English grammar, and it trains your mind just like math."
He retired in 1990.
Mr. Gorman met his wife, Lorraine, while they were attending a summer seminar for Latin teachers in Oregon.
Born in Waterloo, Iowa, he served in the Army during the Korean War in the ski patrol in Alaska.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Diana; brothers Daniel, John and Michael, and sisters Thelma Whorton, Eileen Hanson, Jeanne Kullen, and Mary Jo Colgan.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd., in Arlington Heights. Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Church, 820 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery, 700 N. River Road, Des Plaines.
