Dr. Robert L. Rhodes,

Bob, inspired, encouraged and aided the lives of countless people.

He was born on January 30, 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Edward and Luvenia Rhodes. His parents preceded him in death.

Bob's family relocated to Calwa when he was four.

He went on to graduate from Washington Union High School and Reedley College.

As a student he excelled in football, while also nurturing his life long love of science, literature, and music.

Bob worked for PG&E and proudly served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Infantry before leaving Fresno to pursue his dream of becoming a physician.

Bob earned his B.S. from California State University, Hayward, and his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of California, Irvine.

Bob returned to Fresno to complete his residency at Valley Medical Center.

Bob practiced at Madera Community Hospital in Madera, Sierra View District Hospital in Porterville, and North Kern State Prison in Delano.

He was awarded many accolades, including an induction to the Wall of Honor at the African American Museum in Fresno.

That recognition held special significance because he was inducted along with his three brothers.

A modest and down to earth man, when people referred to him as Dr. Rhodes he would always reply, Just call me Bob.

Whether fishing in Mexico, listening to live blues, or simply working around his house, Bob's passion for life was evident in everything he did. His generosity, compassion, and wonderful sense of humor enriched the lives of many.

Bob passed away on August 2, 2007, in Visalia, California, at the age of 63.

He is profoundly missed.

Bob is survived by his daughter Kathleen Rhodes Shockley and her husband Ken and their son Arik of Fresno; sister, Helen Polk of Fresno; sister, Thelma Fraziear of Sacramento; brother, King Rhodes of Dallas, Texas; brother, James Rhodes and his wife Bonnie of Fresno; brother, Cecil Rhodes of Modesto; and a sister, Shirley Jackson of Fresno.

He is further survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives, as well as a wide network of friends.

A Memorial Service for Dr. Robert L. Rhodes will be held at The Downtown Club, 2120 Kern Street, Fresno, California, 93721 on Sunday, August 12, 2007, at 2:00 p.m.
