Augustus Dickens, a younger brother of author Charles Dickens, married Harriet Lovell at Trinity Church, Marylebone, 5th of December 1848. Harriet Dickens went blind two years later and Augustus separated from her. In 1858 Augustus left Britain for America, accompanied by Bertha Phillips, the daughter of an Irish barrister. Author Charles Dickens was more than generous to Harriet, his sister-in-law, who remained in England. Augustus Dickens died 1866 in Chicago, at the age of 38, of tuberculosis.
