Known to old residents of Springfield as Squire Underwood. Son of John and Clarissa Underwood, he was the youngest of twelve children. Married Elizabeth Coble on Jan. 29, 1866. They had no children. He served for several years as assessor of Island Grove Township, was a jailer of the county for two years, served one term as Supervisor, and was Justice of the Peace in Springfield from 1872 to 1876.
