Merchant and banker, son of James Adger and Margaret Crawford, James Adger II was born in Moneynick, Northern Ireland, in 1777. He migrated in 1794 to New York, and thence in 1802 to Charleston, South Carolina, where he prospered in banking and shipping. At one time he was ranked fourth richest man in the United States. On September 6th, 1806, he married Sarah Elizabeth Ellison; there were nine children, among them Margaret Milligan Adger (1807-1884), wife of the Rev. Thomas Smyth (1808-1873), pastor of Second Presbyterian Church, Charleston; and the Rev. John Bailey Adger (1810-1899), Presbyterian minister, pastor, educator, and translator. Sarah Elizabeth (Ellison) Adger died in Charleston on October 18th, 1856, and was buried in the Second Presbyterian Churchyard. James Adger II died in the St. Nicholas Hotel, New York City, on September 24th, 1858, and was buried beside his wife on November 27th, 1858. He left substantial bequests to each of his children and grandchildren.
