Elza Hayes is listed in 1860 Fayette Co., Pa. Census as the son of George and Sabina (Goodnight) Hayes. His YOB is listed as 1854. This same info is given on his marriage license to Margaret Bolyard on Oct., 26, 1877 in Monongalia Co., WV (age 23, which would equate to 1854, born in Fayette Co., Pa., s/o George Hayes).
It should be noted that this marriage was his only legal marriage, as the Preston County Journal, Kingwood, WV, dated Mar. 12, 1896., page 3, lists that their divorce was finalized. So from 1877 until 1896 he was legally married to Margaret Bolyard.
His middle name appears to be "Johnson", as the birth record for his son Jacob Wilson Hayes lists his father as Johnson Hayes, and his mother was at that time still married to Elza Hayes.
