Samuel Zittle, a son of Mary Magdalena (née Hiestand) and Michael Zittle, senior, was born in 1804 in Washington County, Maryland. He was a laborer in and around Zittlestown in Boonsboro District, Washington County. The 1860 and 1870 U.S. Censuses show he owned a modest amount of real estate.

Samuel Zittle and Lydia Ann Mock were married on 25 February 1849 in Washington County. The couple were the parents of seven children, six of whom lived to maturity.

Boonsboro may refer either to the town itself or to District 6 (Boonsboro) which includes Zittlestown.
