Marguerite Louise d'Orléans was born at the Château de Blois, the eldest child of Gaston de France, Duc d'Orléans, and his second wife, Marguerite of Lorraine, daughter of Francis II, Duke of Lorraine, and Countess Christina of Salm. Her father was the younger son of Henri IV, King of France and his second wife, Marie de' Medici. She was married by proxy on April 19, 1661, to Cosimo de' Medici, Grand Prince of Tuscany, the future Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Three children were born to their marriage, but it was an unhappy one and the couple separated following the birth of their third child and Marguerite Louise returned to France in 1675. Although she was supposed to be confined to the Abbey of Saint Peter at Montmartre and surrender her rights as a Royal Princess of France, she was known to frequent the royal court at Versailles upon occasion. Later in life she confined herself to the convent at Saint-Mandé and led a more modest lifestyle. She experienced deteriorating health in her last years. She was buried in the Picpus Cemetery, in Paris.
