Bio:

Herbert "Bert" Robert Kuck was the son of Bremen, Germany born (specifically Bramstedt, Lower Saxony) immigrant Henry Luther Kuck and Wisconsin born Caroline Wilhelmia (Geist), Kuck in Flora Township, Renville County Minnesota although his WWII Draft Record states Roberson Falls, Minnesota. It is believed that Roberson Falls is an ancestry.com transcription error intending to say Redwood Falls, which is nearby Flora. If you view the original document it clearly says Redwood Falls. He and some of his siblings, primarily the males, began changing the spelling to Cook in the early 1900's and most of his records reflect that change. His sisters marriage records spell their names as Kuck. Herbert's parents are buried at Fairmount Memorial in Spokane, Washington with headstones still spelled Kuck.

Herbert was a young teenager when roughly about 1907, he, his parents and siblings migrated west from the Flora and Redwood Falls, Minnesota areas to Moscow, Idaho, then Spokane briefly before finally settling on a farm in Reardan, Washington. The year is estimated based on the fact that the family headed by Henry L. Kuck still appears in Minnesota on the 1905 Minnesota State Territorial Census and by his sister Mabel's July 1907 obituary which says her parents reside in Moscow, Idaho. His father's later obituary says the family came west a bit earlier, but given the evidence, it is thought that an informant on that obituary had the wrong year.

Bert is seen living in the family home in Reardan at seventeen years of age on the 1910 U.S. Census. He came of age and like a few other siblings moved to Portland, Oregon likely following the 1912 death of his father. His widowed mother would eventually land in Portland as well before her 1925 death, presumably as she followed her adult children to the area.

Based on information recently provided by a descendant, it is believed that Herbert had ended up in Montana for some reason as a youngman and had firstly married a Elma (Rhode), Clifton and that they had a daughter named Dorothy Evelyn Cook, later seen going by her step-father's last name of Dorothy E.Clifton. Nothing much is known of her other than she appears to have married twice, once to a gentleman by the last name of Gillis or Gillies and lastly prior to her 1987 Portland, Oregon death had been married to a William Alt Hayes.

Per the 1920 US Census Herbert R. Cook was single and living in Portland, Oregon on Taylor Street. He is listed as a cook in the restaurant industry. Interestingly, on the same page is Freida E. Linder, nearly all persons on that census page are listed as lodgers, and so it appears to be a boarding house, very common in that era.

"Bert" as he was called, married for the second time to Frieda E. Linder on 27 July 1920 in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington. The witnesses to their marriage were Herbert's sister Wanda (Kuck), Johnston and her husband Edward Lee Johnston per WA. State Marriage records. While they initially lived in Portland, he & Frieda are believed by descendants to have moved to California where they were known to be owners or operators of restaurants. It is known however that Herbert was living in Portland in 1925 when his mother died per her obituary. It is possible that research might not have revealed that he could have moved back and forth between any of the western states, as several of his siblings would do during their younger years.

Frieda and Herbert had a son Donald Darwin Cook born in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon on 10 July 1928. He died in Portland, Oregon on 8 May 2001 and according to those records his mother was Frieda E. Linder which has been recently confirmed by family members. Donald is said to have been laid to rest near his mother. Because Herbert & Freida divorced early, their son Donald was not raised for the most part by Herbert and did not really ever know his father. He purportedly had not seen his father between his toddler years and teen years when they reconnected at the funeral of one of "Bert's" sisters and agreed to keep in touch, but Herbert had passed away shortly after.

Going back to the 1930 US Census, Herbert and Frieda both age 34, with their baby Donald listed as a 1 year old appear. They are living on Hoyt Street in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Donald is a "Night Man" in the Garage industry, Frieda's occupation is listed as "none". By June of 1937 they had apparently divorced as a subsequent marriage record was found for Freida when she remarried.

On the last available US Census of 1940 Herbert was found living in Oakland, California as a divorced lodger. That census indicates he was working as a carpenter in the building industry. In the 1930's there were found a few Herbert Cook's in Oakland or San Francisco City Directory's, some stating occupation as a kitchen worker, but no spouse or other information to confirm that it was the correct Herbert or "Bert". In the meantime, his ex-wife Frieda had remarried Collin "Curly" Munroe Masters and appears in Collins household back in Portland Oregon on the same census year of 1940. Herbert & Freida's son Donald D. Cook, by then 11 years old, is found living in the surrounding rural Portland area as well, but in the household of his maternal grandfather John Linder (incorrectly listed as Lender on census). Recent communication with descendants tells that Donald was mostly raised on his grandparent's farm with his mother visiting frequently. Frieda was the daughter of Swiss immigrant farmers John and Elizabeth Linder of the Germantown, Portland area and they and several of her siblings are buried in the Bethany Presby. Cemetery, Rock Creek, Washington County, Oregon.

Research found Herbert served in the US Coast Guard between 1942 and was discharged in 1944. His 1942 WWII Draft Card in Oalkland, California lists his current employer as the California Quartermaster Depot. It also has a portion filled in with the name of the "person who will always know where you live" and it says Mrs. Annie Davis. She appears to have possibly simply been his widowed land lord. This contributor was unable to find any familial ties between them.

Also in 1942, his brother John George Kuck of Redwood Falls, Minnesota died and his published Minnesota obituary lists among others, a surviving half-brother Herbert Cook of Oakland, California.

By 1951 at the latest, "Bert" appears to have returned back to the Spokane area as his name appears in Spokane City Directories, and he is stated to be living there per some family member obituaries. In 1956 he married Mildred V. (Maiden: Loveland) Gerloff, Rose. Their Idaho State marriage record lists her name as Mildred V. Rose. The official marriage record year online may be off a little as they are seen listed as husband and wife on earlier City Directories. It was also noted that on one of the entries for Spokane City Directories that the address of a home he and Mildred were living at had been the same address listed on another previous year for his nephew Paul Cook. It is unclear if that rental home had been shared by the two men or if perhaps one had rented it, moved out and the other moved in.

An earlier obituary of one of Herbert's third wife, Mildred's brothers provided clues to her marriages and last names when it stated that he was survived by Mrs. J.A. Rose of Akron, Ohio at that time. Her parents were Warren Loveland and Catherine "Kate" Reiter. As seen above, given her last name of Rose on a marriage record to a Herbert Cook, it would confirm her parents and prior spouses. Herbert's obit was finally found and mentions his step children Edward Gerloff of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Evelyn Gerloff, Otto of S.D., as well as son Donald Cook of Portland, Ore. The obit states that one year prior to death he had moved from Spokane (about thirty miles away) to Latah, Wa. where he was residing at the time of his death. The tiny farming community of Latah had drawn other of Herbert's siblings and their children for several years and it is likely why he moved there late in life, to be near the few family members still in the Spokane area. His half-sister Annie Keil of whom he is buried next two had just died in October of 1960 in the same small town and possibly he had moved there to help her as she had been widowed only a short time prior to her death. His funeral notice also says he had lived in Spokane 13 years prior to his move to Latah which basically matches when he was first again found in Spokane City Directories in 1951. His obituary mentions seven grandchildren, some at least likely actually being step-grandchildren, but not confirmed. A Cook/Hart descendant says he lived just around the corner in Latah from sister Annie (Kuck), Keil in the last year of so of his life.

As of 2015 no Washington Death Record for Herbert has been found, only the above funeral notice printed in the Spokane newspaper, obviously he died in Spokane County, but it is unclear if it was Latah or the City of Spokane, but he is buried with a military headstone in the Latah Cemetery in Latah, Spokane County, WA. next to his half sister. Records found that after his death, 3rd wife Mildred Cook applied for and received a US Coastguard Veteran headstone for him and indeed it is confirmed to have been placed at his grave site.

Mildred died in Latah in 1964 and is buried in Emmett County, Iowa near her parents graves in the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville. Her "Find a Grave Memorial page also has an obituary article posted on it.
