Alan J. Arthur, 81, of Charleston died Dec. 14, 2003, in CAMC Memorial Hospital after an apparent heart attack.
He was born Oct. 11, 1922, in South Charleston, son of the late Roy H. and Minnie Scott Arthur. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Mitchell Arthur.
He was the retired president of Rose City Press, Charleston, and after retirement, served several years as its chairman. He was very active in many civic organizations including: member of Kanawha United Presbyterian Church and its choir; held various offices at the church for over 60 years; served as past lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis, joining in 1966; a volunteer for the American Red Cross; Book Buddy for CAMC Women and Children's Hospital; and a variety of musical groups.
Surviving are a daughter, Joan Arthur Irvine and her husband, Art, of Westport, Conn.; son, A. Joseph Arthur Jr. of Teaneck, N.J.; brother, Bill Arthur of Charleston; grandchildren, Scott A. and Elizabeth A. Irvine, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nieces and nephews.
Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Kanawha United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston.
