EINAR TANGEN, STAR ATHLETE COACH, IS DEAD
Pneumonia Results In Death At Racine Hospital; Former Two Rivers Man

Einar (Hans) Tangen, 35, former Two Rivers resident and athletic director and coach at Washington Park high school, Racine, died this morning at St. Mary's hospital in that city.

Before going to Racine to coach two years ago Mr. Tangen coached football and basketball at Waupun, Wisconsin Rapids and Superior East high schools following his graduation from the University of Wisconsin. He formerly played semi-pro baseball with the Manitowoc club in the Wisconsin State league.

Taken Ill Feb. 4
Illness forced Mr. Tangen to give up teaching and coaching at Racine on Feb. 4. He was taken ill the day following his return with the school basketball team from a trip. The bus carrying the players stalled (photo) in a drift and Mr. Tangen got out to assist in getting the bus back on the highway. He was taken with a severe chill which developed into pneumonia which caused his death today.

Einar Tangen was born in Norway in 1902, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Tangen. When a boy of four, he came to this country with his parents. The family located at Two Rivers. He was graduated from the Two Rivers high school in 1922 after a brilliant athletic career. He was on the school basketball team for four years. He enrolled at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, taking the physical education course. He was a member of both the varsity basketball and baseball teams, earning letters in both sports. He was a forward on the basketball team and played third base on the ball club. Tangen was also a member of the football squad at Wisconsin.

Became a Coach
Following his graduation from Wisconsin in 1926 Mr. Tangen took up coaching as a profession. He was athletic director and coach at Waupun high school of the Little Ten conference and later took a similar position with Wisconsin Rapids high school. In 1933 he was named freshman football coach at Lawrence college, Appleton.

In 1935 he was appointed athletic director and coach at East High school, Superior. In June, 1936, he was appointed to head the athletic program at Washington Park High school, Racine, succeeding Thomas Heardon, who took charge of football and basketball at Green Bay East High school.

Mr. Tangen played semi-pro ball during the vacation periods and was a member of the Manitowoc club under Manager "Rabbit" Russell in 1929, playing in the outfield. In November, 1935, he was awarded his master's degree at Wisconsin, after a summer school course, majoring in science.

Married in 1929
In 1929 Mr. Tangen married Miss Helen Norris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Norris of this city.

Survivors are the widow; a son, John, Jr., 7, Racine; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Tangen, Two Rivers; one brother, Edwin, Two Rivers; five sisters, Mrs. Arthur Mermuys, Solveig, Helen and Ardith, all of Two Rivers, and Mrs. Frederic Kaiser, Madison.

Burial will probably be at Two Rivers. Funeral arrangements will be announced tomorrow.
