Mrs. Joseph T. Steffes, 69, of 3611 Glenwood St., Two Rivers, one of the last teachers in the former Roosevelt Elementary School on Two Rivers' south side, earlier active in club circles, died at 7:30 a.m. Monday at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. Paul Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers (sic).

Mrs. Steffes, nee Margaret Liljequist, was born March 13, 1904, at Wausau, daughter of the late Oran and Anna Lerum Liljequist. She was graduated from Wausau High school with the Class of 1921 and then enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, formerly Stevens Point Normal school. Her first teaching assignment was at the elementary school at Muscoda, Wis., during which time she did post graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She came to Two Rivers in September of 1926 to teach at the Roosevelt School. She was married to Joseph Steffes Aug. 6, 1927.

The family moved in 1942 to Washington, D.C., where Mr. Steffes became field engineer for Hamilton Industries of Two Rivers, serving the eastern area out of the firm's Washington office. The family returned to Two Rivers in 1965. In her earlier years at Two Rivers, Mrs. Steffes was active in dramatics and was a past president of the Catholic Women's Study Club.

Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Allan (Ruth) Kelly, of Decatur, Ill., and Mrs. Ronald (Anne) Weaver, of Crystal Spring, Md.; two sons, Robert J., of Two Rivers and John I, of Crystal Spring, Md.; two sisters, Mrs. Wilford Marks, of Hazelhurst, Wis., and Mrs. David Gorman, of Wausau and 13 grandchildren.

Friends may call at Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, Two Rivers, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday where memorial service will be at 8 p.m.

Memorials may be sent to the Cancer Fund.
