WINIFRED SPRING

Winifred F. Spring, age 94, of Woodland Drive, Two Rivers, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2011.

Winifred was born on Oct. 13, 1916, in the old "Tannery" section of Two Rivers, daughter of the late Charles and Amelia (Cammers) Ahrens. The family farmed near Shoto on land purchased by Winifred's grandfather August Ahrens. Her education at Tannery School and Two Rivers High School was followed by a degree from Milwaukee State Teachers College. Later she earned a degree in special education from UW-Milwaukee. On Dec. 24, 1942, Winifred married Charles A. Spring of Port Henry, N.Y., in Nashville, Tenn., while Charles was on leave from the Army. He preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 2006. Winifred taught primary grades at Rhinelander, LaCrosse and Two Rivers before starting to teach at Sheboygan in 1957. She was Principal of Grant School, Sheboygan, at the time of her retirement in 1983. As a member of the Sheboygan Human Rights Association, Winifred was Program Director of the Head Start Program of Sheboygan in its early years. Winifred was an early supporter of the Area Chapter of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and of the Glacial Lakes Conservancy. As an early clarinet player she was devoted to public radio music.

Survivors include two sons: Shedd Spring, Mark (Nancy) Spring; grandchildren: Soibian Huntsman, Charles R. Spring, Sara Spring and Alex Spring. Also surviving are dear friends: Chesley Spring, Carolyn Washburne, Tomiko and Jim Christensen; devoted caregivers: Louise and Holmes Smotherman. Winifred's brother: Charles (Jean) Ahrens, also survives.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Gladys Curtis and Rachel Dohr; and a brother: Lincoln Ahrens.

The Klein & Stangel Funeral Home, Two Rivers, is assisting the family.
