She was born in Breckinridge County to Flora and Paul Cissna. She graduated from Louisville Girls High in 1942 1/2 and was employed at Dupont Chemical, where set met her husband of 65 years, Howard. Emma Lou was a retired distributor for Pickerell & Craig and was a busy volunteer throughout her life for many organizations including the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Southwest Hospital, and the PTA at Stonestreet Elementary. She was a member of the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana for 53 years and served as the Area 11 cookie chair for many of those years.
Emma Lou had a strong zest for life and enjoyed square dancing, badminton, camping, chinese checkers, swimming, cards, Churchill Downs, gardening, traveling, Cincinnati Reds baseball, the Kentucky State Fair, and telling jokes! She was a charter member of her church, Good Shepherd Lutheran and brightened the lives of many with her sense of humor.
Emma Lou was preceded in death by her son, Roger; and grandson, Reed.
Survivors include her husband, Howard T. Clevenger; children, Howard "Pete" (Sandy), Nancy "Kay", and Carol (Kathy); daughter-in-law, Debbie; grandchildren, Holly (Grady), Tad, Alex (Chris), Nathan (Stephanie), Tim, Joe (Betsy), Forest, and Clay; great-grandchildren, Sophie, Tegan, and Kylee; niece, Tina; and her dear friend, Ruth.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 9718 Dixie Highway, with burial in Bethany Cemetery. Visitation will be noon-8 p.m. Friday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway.
