June Smith Nelson
Keep Smiling 1917 ~ 2007

Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, June Smith Nelson was finally relieved of her pain and suffering and passed away peacefully on July 8, 2007. She came into this world June 4, 1917 in Riverdale, Idaho, the fifth of 10 children born to Robert Lauritz and Doris Bennett Smith. She graduated from Jordan High School in 1935 and attended college at Brigham Young University. She married Virden James Nelson on June 1, 1937 in Ely, Nevada; later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1938. She and Virden raised their family in Sandy, Utah. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and faithfully served in many callings including Relief Society counselor and Primary president. She enjoyed square dancing with her husband, playing pinochle and other games, and making quilts especially for her children and grandchildren. June worked for a few years at Sperry Univac to help with family finances, but first and foremost she was a devoted, caring mother. Her greatest joy was spending time with and taking care of her family.
She is survived by her eight children, R. Kent Nelson (Jolene), Lyn E. Nelson (Lynda), Linda Bringhurst, Verdene Lyon (Ken), JaNae Henderson (Patrick), Julie Ashby (Richard), Royd R. Nelson (Kate), and Reed A. Nelson (Julie); as well as 49 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; her brothers, Robert Bennett Smith and Kay Lauritz Smith; and sisters, Hazel Petersen and Alice Olsen. Preceded in death by her husband Virden; parents; brothers, Ray and DeVar; sisters, Velma, Phyllis and Rayola; and a granddaughter, Tina Kay.
Funeral services will be held Sat. July 14, 2007, at 3:30 p.m. at the Sandy L.D.S. First Ward, 8650 So. 220 E., Sandy, Utah. Viewings will take place Fri. 6:30-8 p.m. at Goff Mortuary, 8090 So. State, Midvale, and Saturday 2:15-3:15 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at Sandy City Cemetery, 90th So. and 700 E., Sandy, Utah following the services. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Silverado Hospice and Atria Assisted Living for the kind and caring service that they rendered to our mother.
